I know lots of Oppo’s love aircraft. I saw this short take off/landing video using highly modified aircraft. Seems like a ton of fun.

The a/c in that YouTube still must have been custom built just for this competition. And that guy with the pusher doesn’t need to worry about burying the nose. Wild stuff.

This was an unofficial pissing contest among bush pilots for a long time, then it became a sanctioned event. It’s really cool, but a little visually confusing because they’re normally taking off and landing into a steady 20+ mph headwind (the video mentions it).
I love how his tail is already flying before he starts his roll. I’ve talked to one of these guys before and they say the only scary part about the whole thing is the braking -- you have to keep from pitching forward onto your prop, which would destroy the engine.

A prop strike is the only real danger, but they’re carrying a lot of power to fly that slow - it’s hard on the engine to do that repeatedly.
I love seeing the tail up before they even start the roll - the engine and prop must be modified to do that, I assume.

Those slats are cool - and are probably automatic, like they are on the Helio Courier. It basically requires airflow below a certain AoA to retract them. A pretty neat mechanical trick.

Unrelated note, but my parents lived in NZ in the mid-70s for a couple years. My dad was on a visa to demonstrate and sell ag planes that were being built there under contract (their Ag market is HUGE). The specific function was called Aerial Topdressing, which was basically like organic cropdusting...except on crazy hills, not big open fields. When an ag plane is empty, it’s insanely maneuverable and they would often land uphill with a sub-100' rollout. Then they taxi to the top of the hill, reload, and takeoff downhill to shorten the roll. A lot of the fields are 20 degrees incline or more.
I don’t have any specific videos to recommend, but if you search “New Zealand topdressing” there are plenty of videos on YouTube. It’s a fun little niche of the aviation world.
Actually, just found a decent one. Not too bonkers with the takeoffs and landing, but CFIT danger
is always around :D

Ok, Ag pilots are a special combination of highly skilled + a little bit of crazy to begin with, before you even start to throw in hills.

One more for you — one of my favorite airplanes, the Twin Otter. When you consider it’s full of people, this is pretty impressive. Saba island is a small volcanic Dutch rock you can just barely see from Sint Maarten. I’d love to visit — pretty neat place, looks sort of like Hawaii with a European vibe. They only had one spot for an airport, though, since most of the island is over 1,000' tall.

DeHavilland Canada made a whole bunch of sweet airplanes. Impressive use of the *full* runway. 1,300' according to Wikipedia. That’s SHORT.

They do the contest at Oshkosh as well, which is a better location for determining true STOL prowess as the headwind ins minimal and inconsistent. Still some crazy short distances.
